About the EHS Discussion Topics

This discussion forum provides an overview of research and product development in the area of technology support for independent aging. The discussion will progress through a series of health problems or issues that are commonly identified as key to independence and well being in later life. Included within each topic presentation are descriptions of research studies that test technologies to address these problems.  Examples of technology that is being developed or currently in use are also given.  We are interested in your thoughts, ideas, and insights as someone with technology-related expertise and as someone who is now, or may in the future face challenges of aging either for yourself or for someone you care for.  We invite you to apply your expertise in discussions about practical applications of technology for independent aging. Here are some questions to keep in mind as you participate:

  • Do you have ideas for other strategies or technologies for addressing the topic area?
  • What do you think about the benefits of technologies –or of possible risks and privacy concerns surrounding the use of technologies?
  • What are the relative benefits of low-tech as well as high tech approaches to promoting independence of older adults?

The following are our preliminary set of topics to be covered over the next 6 months. As this project develops, and we collect survey answers and discussion comments from participants these topic areas may change and/or expand.
